Optometric Services offered by Jeffrey A. Young, O.D.
A complete eye health and vision examination will be performed by the doctor that not only determines visual acuity, but also tests other important vision skills and can identify the presence of eye disease (such as glaucoma or cataracts). The following procedures will be part of your comprehensive eye exam:
- A complete health history taken prior to examination
- Inspection of the exterior and interior of your eyes for signs of possible eye or systemic diseases (this may include dilating the pupils)
- Visual acuity testing
- Refractive testing (determination of the need for corrective lenses)
- A check of eye coordination and eye muscle control
- Focusing tests
- Intraocular pressure measurements (as part of the glaucoma testing process)
- Special testing for color perception, depth perception, field of vision and other vision skills as needed
- Digital retinal photography for baseline photo-documentation is recommended at the initial exam and periodically thereafter.
Through these procedures, an optometric physician can often determine general health problems such as high blood pressure, hardening of the arteries, diabetes, and even brain tumors. This makes an eye health and vision examination a common entry point into the entire health care process.
